Love God. Love People.

Join us for worship on Sunday morning at 10:30 am

Welcome to West Newton UMC!

  • We are located in Decatur Township on the southwest side of Indianapolis and have been community connected for over 150 years. Our goal is to be humbly submitted, Biblically formed disciples of Jesus Christ who love and serve both God and neighbor.
  • We are mission-minded which means we value service to others. We care for our community through our food pantry co-op and our partnership with West Newton Elementary.
  • We value Bible study through small group study and Sunday School. We use RightNow Media and offer it as a free Bible Study resource to all of our visitors.
  • We love our kids and nurture them through KidZone (held during worship), Club 3:16 (weekly youth group ages 10-17), Kingdom Kids (weekly children's group ages 4-9), VBS and special programming throughout the year.
  • Our worship service begins at 10:30. We sing both contemporary songs and traditional hymns. The sermons are Biblically based, but are relatable and applicable to every day life. We participate in Holy Communion every Sunday.
  • We invite you to check out our service via our YouTube livestream and Facebook videos. Or please join us in person on Sunday mornings.

We look forward to meeting you!

Our Story

In the early 1850’s two men from West Newton, John Burris, a local preacher and David Horton, having returned from attending a revival service at Mount Olive began holding prayer and testimonial meetings in their home. That was the beginning of the first Methodist Episcopal Church at West Newton. By 1857, regular attendance was such that there was a need for a fixed place of worship. A plot of land on the southwest corner of what is now Mooresville and Mendenhall Roads was purchased and a church building erected.

This church served the congregation for 40 years until it was sold at auction and was moved two blocks east. A new church was built on the same site and was dedicated in March of 1901. During the first 100 years of existence the church was the head of the West Newton circuit, sharing some 30 pastors with Mt. Olive, Friendswood, Maywood and Bethel. In 1950, West Newton ME Church was able to support its own pastor.

In 1939 all branches of the Methodist church, including the Methodist Episcopal, merged together to form The Methodist Church. In 1968, a further merger occurred with the Evangelical United Brethren Church forming the United Methodist Church. West Newton EM became West Newton UMC.

In 1965, nine acres were purchased by the congregation on Mendenhall Road where a new parsonage was built. In May of 1970 the decision to build a new church on the property was made. After sufficient fundraising, a new church was built and later consecrated on October 5, 1975.

West Newton UMC has seen growth and changes throughout the years. But one thing remains the same. For over 150 years, the people of WNUMC have continued to seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
